Resumen de la charla:

In this colloquium I will first recount the journey from graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad de los Andes in 1997, towards becoming a full Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at University of Florida and establishing the Nino Research Group. I will cover my experience as a Ph.D. student, postdoctoral scholar, and the tenure and promotion process through the Assistant and Associate Professor ranks until attaining full Professorship in 2013. Throughout the conversation, I will aim to provide a summary of guidelines and lessons learned that combined with a current overview of the academic environment in the USA will provide the audience with an encouraging and realistic insight on possible academic opportunities in the USA. In addition, in the second half of the colloquium, I will present details of the current research projects in the Nino Research Group, including the use mixed ionic-electronic conductors for energy conversion; the performance of electronic materials under extreme environments such as temperature and radiation; utilization of resistive switching materials in advanced neuromorphic hardware architectures, and the growth and defect engineering of novel semiconducting materials for room temperature gamma-ray radiation detection.
